Sonics Acquire Brent Barry from Bulls

August 12,

“Hawk Dealt to Bulls for Barry ”

The Seattle Supersonics traded G Hersey Hawkins and G James Cotton to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for G Brent Barry.

Note:

  • Cotton is a free agent next summer.

1999 - ‘00 Salaries:

Hersey Hawkins, Chi.: $4.1 M.

James Cotton, Chi.: $0.460 M.

Brent Barry, Sea.: $3.9 M.

Who got the better of the deal?

Seattle.

Why?

“Brent Barry is a talented and versatile young player who is entering the prime of his career,” said Sonics’ General Manager Wally Walker. “We believe that he is a perfect fit for the up-tempo style we wish to play next year.”

Barry should provide the Sonics with more athleticism and versatility. He should start along with Gary Payton in the back court and, on occasion, allow Gary to play the off guard position.

Brent has never been known for his defense; however, with Payton, newly signed Vernon Maxwell, and Ruben Patterson as defensive stoppers, Brent should not be placed in a position to have to guard the opposition’s top offensive threats.

Barry, 27, is younger than the 32 year old Hawkins. Brent is a better passer while Hersey is a better perimeter shooter. However, Brent does have great range on his shot; but, his shot selection leaves a lot to be desired.

Hawkins returns to the Chicago area where he is from. He played college ball at Bradley University. His veteran leadership should aid the development of rookies Elton Brand, Ron Artest, Michael Ruffin, and Lari Ketner.

“Hersey is a veteran scorer and a good defender, and Chicagoans who have followed Hersey's career know his winning reputation both on and off the court,” said Bulls’ GM Jerry Krause. “Along with the four young, big people we drafted this year, Hersey will make a nice addition to our team.”

James Cotton will have to be very impressive in workouts and training camp to make the Bulls’ final roster.
