Orlando gets Future First Round Pick from Clippers”

The Orlando Magic obtained a future lottery protected first round pick from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for G / F Corey Maggette, F Derek Strong, the draft rights to Keyon Dooling (10th pick overall) and cash.

Note:

  • If the Clippers don’t make the playoffs next season, Orlando receives the pick.

2000 - 2001 Player Salaries:

Corey Maggette, LAC: $1.35 M.

Derek Strong, LAC: $3 M.

Keyon Dooling, LAC: $1.54 M.

Who got the better of the deal?

Orlando.

Why?

The Magic made this deal simply to free up $3 M more from their salary cap. They now have about $21 M of cap space to sign two top level free agents (re: Tim Duncan and Grant Hill) to the maximum first year salary of $9 M each. If they aren’t successful this season, Orlando can try again next summer and pursue F Chris Webber.

The Clips actually helped themselves. They gained more good young talent in Maggette and Dooling to team with Darius Miles and Quentin Richardson. These additions provide the Clips with the ability to sign and trade free agent G Derek Anderson and not be devastated by his departure.

“Mavs Acquire Murdock from Clippers”

The Mavericks obtained G Eric Murdock from the LA Clippers in exchange for C / F Sean Rooks.

Notes:

  • Murdock is a free agent after the 2002 season.

2000 - 2001 Player Salaries:

Eric Murdock, Dal.: $2.1 M.

Sean Rooks, LAC: $ M.

Who got the better of the deal?

LA Clippers.

Why?

Murdock was hardly healthy at all last season for the Clips. He suffered nagging ankle problems throughout the season. He could replace Erick Strickland who the Mavs traded to the Knicks; however, Murdock, 5’11, is shorter than the 6’3 Strickland. He provides insurance for Dallas if they deal point guard Robert Pack.

Sean Rooks was supposed to be the Mavs physical, rebounding, low post presence when he was acquired; however, after heaping huge amounts of praise on Rooks, GM / Coach Don Nelson hardly played him. The Clips hope Sean can provide toughness and rebounding for them next season backing up center Michael Olowokandi and forward Brian Skinner.

“Mavs Acquire Wallace and Harvey from Knicks”

Dallas obtained F John Wallace and the draft rights to F Donnell Harvey (22nd pick overall) from the New York Knicks in exchange for G Erick Strickland and the draft rights to G Pete Mickeal (58th pick overall).

2000 - 2001 Player Salaries:

John Wallace, Dal.: $2.2 M.

Donnell Harvey, Dal.: $0.863 M.

Erick Strickland, NY: $3 M.

Pete Mickeal, NY: $0.317 M.

Who got the better of the deal?

New York.

Why?

The Knicks are in a win now mode and don’t believe Donnell Harvey can get them over the top toward winning a championship.

Knicks’ head coach Jeff Van Gundy didn’t play Wallace any minutes because Wallace refused to be a factor on the defensive end of the floor. John has a lot of offensive weapons; but, he never played defense.

Strickland gives the Knicks some flexibility to make future moves like trading guards Chris Childs or Charlie Ward. Erick is a very good defender who draws a lot of charges with his quick feet and good positioning (with some good acting thrown in as well).

Van Gundy said he's not sure where Strickland will fit in - as a point guard or shooting guard. He played both at Dallas.

“I'm looking at him as a guard who can help us,” Van Gundy said. “I don't think you know somebody fully until you work with him consistently.

“His decision making at times would be an area he can improve on, but tenacity, energy defensively and rebounding and taking the ball at the basket is a real strength,” Van Gundy added. “He's been primarily a defensive-rebounding-type player and this year he shot the best he ever shot. He's been a little streaky shooting.”

“Mavs Obtain Alexander from Orlando”

The Mavericks obtained the draft rights to G Courtney Alexander (13th pick overall) from the Orlando Magic in exchange for a future first round pick and cash.

Notes:

  • Orlando receives $3 M from Dallas.

2000 - 2001 Player Salary:

Courtney Alexander, Dal.: $1.32 M.

Who got the better of the deal?

Orlando in the short term;

Dallas in the long term.

Why?

The Magic dealt Alexander’s draft rights to free up more salary cap room. If they can sign two top level free agents like Tim Duncan and / or Tracy McGrady, then this trade will be a big plus. Alexander is probably the best scorer in this year’s Draft class. He has the ability to shoot over defenders and create his own shot off the dribble. He and Mavericks’ star Michael Finley could create a lot of match up problems for opponents. However, if Finley leaves via free agency next summer, Courtney could be a solid replacement for Finley as well.

“Mavs Acquire Najera for Langhi

The Dallas Mavericks obtained the draft rights to F Eduardo Najera (38th pick overall) and a future second round pick from the Houston Rockets in exchange for the draft rights to F Dan Langhi (31st pick overall).

Note:

  • Second round contracts don’t have to be guaranteed.

2000 - 2001 Player Salaries:

Eduardo Najera, Dal.: $0.317 M.

Dan Langhi, Hou.: $0.317 M.

Who got the better of the deal?

Houston.

Why?

Langhi is a better scorer and ball handler as well as a better fit in the Rockets new open style of offense. Though Najera is a hard - nosed player, he’ll probably have a more difficult time making the Mavs’ roster than Langhi will making the Rockets’.

“Rockets Acquire Collier

The Houston Rockets traded the draft rights to C Joel Przybilla (9th pick overall) to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for the draft rights to C / F Jason Collier (15th pick overall) and a future first round pick.

Note:

  • Through 2007, Milwaukee sends the pick to Houston when it is not a top 10 pick.

2000 - 2001 Player Salaries:

Joel Przybilla, Mil.: $1.62 M.

Jason Collier, Hou.: $1.19 M.

Who got the better of the deal?

Houston.

Why?

Collier, 7’0, 260, is a versatile big man who can score inside and outside. Though the Rockets wanted to move up higher in the Lottery, they seem pleased with Collier.

Rockets’ Head Coach Rudy Tomjanovich said, “In Collier, we feel he can play center, and all our players can play with in our style of basketball. He can go to forward, and he still fits. We always had one of our big guys spacing the floor. Collier and (Kelvin) Cato can be on the floor at the same time. Steve (Francis), Cuttino (Mobley) and Shandon (Anderson) are guys who penetrate. To have another guy who spaces the floor helps them.”

The Bucks have wanted a shot blocking, defensive presence for many years. Przybilla can provide both qualities. However, his offensive game is limited right; but, at 20 years old, he has a good upside. In addition he won’t be asked to do much scoring in Milwaukee; so, he can focus on what he does best: play defense.

“We're not going to put a lot of pressure on him to come in and contribute right away,” Bucks’ GM Ernie Grunfeld said. “He's fortunate to be in a situation where you don't have to be thrown to the wolves right away. He can take his time and learn. It's a very good situation for him because we don't need him to be an offensive player for us.”

“Bulls get Crawford from Cavs”

The Chicago Bulls obtained the draft rights to G Jamal Crawford (8th pick overall) and cash from the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for the draft rights to C Chris Mihm (8th pick overall).

2000 - 2001 Player Salaries:

Jamal Crawford, Chi.:$1.76 M.

Chris Mihm, Cle.:$1.92 M.

Who got the better of the deal?

Cleveland.

Why?

Crawford, 6’6, may become a star down the line which is good because the Bulls aren’t close to competing for a playoff berth. However, Mihm should have a much more immediate impact with Cleveland. The Cavs need a center whether Zydrunas Ilgauskas is healthy enough to play this season or not. So what if critics label Mihm as soft: Brad Daugherty was called soft and he was five time All - Star for the Cavs. Mihm could have that same type of career.

“Sonics send Sesar to Celtics”

Seattle traded the draft rights to G Josip Sesar (47th pick overall) to the Boston Celtics in exchange for two second round picks in 2001.

Note:

Second round contracts don’t have to be guaranteed.

2000 - 2001 Player Salaries:

Josip Sesar, Bos.: $0.317 M.

Who got the better of the deal?

Neither club.

Why?

If Sesar reports this season to the Celtics, it will be a surprise. He is supposed to be a very good shooter.

The Sonics can use the second round picks in future acquisitions.

“Spurs send Hightower to Lakers “

San Antonio traded the draft rights to G Corey Hightower (54th pick overall) to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for two future second round picks.

Notes:

  • The picks are the Lakers’ second round picks in 2001 and 2002.
  • Second round contracts do not have to be guaranteed.

2000 - 2001 Player Salary:

Corey Hightower, LAL:$0.317 M.

Who got the better of the deal?

Neither club.

Why?

Hightower, 6’6.5, is a long, lanky scorer. However, he probably won’t make the Lakers’ active roster in the near future.

The Spurs can use the picks for future acquisitions.
