Davis to Blazers, O'Neal to Pacers

August 31, 2000

“Blazers Obtain Davis from Pacers”

The Portland Trail Blazers acquired F / C Dale Davis from the Indiana Pacers in exchange for F Jermaine O’Neal and (a signed and traded) C Joe Kleine.

Notes:

  • Kleine signed a 3 - year contract; but, only the first year is guaranteed.

2000 - 2001 Player Salaries:

Dale Davis, Por: $6.175 M.

Jermaine O’Neal, Ind: $5.7 M.

Joe Kleine, Ind: $1 M.

Who got the better of the deal?

Portland.

Why?

At a recent press conference announcing the signing of a contract extension, Dale Davis was thankful for his $8 M salary; but, he complained he was not able to get the “fair market value” he’d receive as a free agent. Pacers GM Donnie Walsh was taken aback by Davis’ remarks. Dale’s statements probably played a part in this trade.

Dale is 6’11 and 31 years of age which means he fits right in with the Blazers theme of “winning right now” in their self proclaimed two year window. He’s a solid rebounder and defender; and, last season, he showcased an improved offensive game. He’ll back up Kemp and Arvydas Sabonis at the power forward and center spots.

“He's a physical guy who does the dirty work,” said Blazer coach Mike Dunleavy. “His size and skills will give us additional depth,” added general manager Bob Whitsitt. “He's in great condition; he'll play another 5-6 years.”

O’Neal asked Blazers’ management to trade him because he didn’t see any more minutes coming his way. He could become the Pacers’ starting power forward. Austin Croshere will be the starting small forward while Al Harrington should back up Croshere.

Jermaine could also see minutes at center backing up Rik Smits (if he decides to play this season), Sam Perkins, and second year player Jeff Foster.

“I think Jermaine O'Neal's quickness and shot-blocking ability will give us tremendous versatility on defense and I think he's the type of player that will fit into the style we're trying to develop here in terms of an up-tempo team,” said Pacers Coach Isiah Thomas.

Kleine was included in the deal for salary cap purposes. He’s been contemplating retirement; so, his playing status is still undecided.
