Rice defeats Texas Southern 76-49 and improves to 5-0

HOUSTON, TX (H&PE Arena) -- The Rice Owls defeated the Texas Southern Lady Tigers 76-49 Wednesday afternoon to improve to 5-0 this season. Malia Fisher scored 22 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds while teammate Ashlee Austin added 16 points and 10 boards to help the Owls get the victory.

Rice's Destiny Jackson added 12 points.

Texas Southern (0-6) struggled to make shots the entire ball game. TSU shot an icy 23.3 fg% (14 for 60) in the ball game. Texas Southern shot a higher percentage (33.8 fg%) Sunday afternoon against the Texas A&M Aggies than against Rice Wednesday afternoon.

Rice did not shoot a high percentage in the first (23.8 fg%) nor the fourth quarter (31.3 fg%) versus Texas Southern; however, the Owls made 19 of 32 shot attempts in the second and third quarters combined to blow the game open.

Fisher had 12 points and 10 rebounds in the first half. Rice outscored TSU 17-11 in the first quarter and 20-6 in the second quarter to lead by 20 (37-17) at halftime.

Rice led by as much as 32 points (60-28) in the ball game. Rice dominated TSU on the boards with a 56-38 rebounding advantage. Rice also outscored TSU 50-16 in the paint.

Andriana Avent scored 18 points to lead Texas Southern.

Rice heads to College Station to face the Texas A&M Aggies on Sunday, November 27. Tip is set for 2 p.m., on SECN+.

TSU's next game is Monday, November 28, on the road against Ole Miss. Tip is scheduled for 5 p.m. on SECN+.
