Texas Southern's Niya Mitchell named SWAC Player of the Week

A pair of solid performances has garnered Texas Southern forward Niya Mitchell the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honor for the week ending December 3. The league made the announcement Tuesday morning.
Mitchell, a 5'10" junior from Bay City, TX, nearly averaged a double-double in games versus Savannah State and Michigan State. Against Savannah State, Mitchell scored 15 points and corralled seven rebounds. She also made three steals and dished out a pair of assists while shooting 6-of-9 from the floor.
Against Michigan State, Mitchell was a bright spot for the Lady Tigers, recording 12 points and 11 rebounds against the Spartan's. The junior was also a factor defensively, swiping two steals and blocking two shots.
For the week, Mitchell averaged 13.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game while shooting a combined 52.3 percent from the field over the pair of contests.
