Houston Cougars sign Ronald Hughey to 3-year contract extension
October 12, 2018 -- 3:49 p.m.
University of Houston Head Coach Ronald Hughey has signed a three-year extension to his existing contract through the 2022 season.
Hughey guided the 2017-'18 Coogs to a 20-12 record and a postseason berth to the WNIT. The WNIT berth was Houston's first postseason berth in seven seasons.
"Ron had a vision for our program when he joined the UH family and it has been exciting to see the steps taken to reach it. He and his staff continue to push our student-athletes to new heights on and off the court," Houston Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman said.
Hughey, who is set to begin his fifth season at the helm, is fresh off leading the Cougars to a 20-win season for the first time since the 2010-11 season. The 2017-18 Cougars finished fifth in American Athletic Conference play, their highest finish since joining the league, and punched the team's first berth to the postseason in seven years with a trip to the WNIT.
"I'm incredibly happy for this opportunity," Hughey said. "First, I want to think my players and coaching staff, because without them, this would not be possible. I love the University of Houston, and I'm ready to be here forever. I'm happy to be at a place where the university and the administration care about women's basketball. This administration, from (Vice President of Athletics) Chris Pezman and (Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development/SWA) DeJuena Chizer and everybody in between, cares about who we are and how we advance, and that's not something you have everywhere.”

This season, Hughey will begin his fifth season as Houston Head Coach. And, Hughey has set a team goal of reaching the Sweet 16 this season.
"We're looking forward to it; and, a lot of people won't say this; but, I am pushing the team to get to the Sweet Sixteen this year. That's the destination for us.
"You've got to a have a bold life and be a risk taker to ever accomplish things in life. I don't ever think that you can sit back and play weak teams and expect to be able to beat great teams.
"I don't ever think that you can sit back and go on the job, do average work, and expect to be promoted.
"I don't think that you can ever go in life and expect to do great things and you don't have a great mindset or a great attitude or a great work ethic to be able to get things done. So, again, it starts in the mind."
"I'm pushing them; and, our destination is to get to the Sweet Sixteen."
