January 29, 2019 -- 1:15 p.m.
After consecutive double-doubles in winning efforts, Prairie View A&M senior guard Gary Blackston has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Men's Basketball Player of the Week. The league made the announcement Tuesday morning.
Blackston posted a double-double in both games from the guard position as PVAMU completed the month of January undefeated at 8-0, 7-0 in SWAC play, to remain the only undefeated team in league play. Blackston averaged 21.5 points and 11.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals in the Panthers' two most recent road wins at Mississippi Valley State and UAPB.
The Baltimore, Md. native scored 14 points with 11 rebounds and two steals in a 89-76 win over the Delta Devils Saturday. Monday night, Blackston had game-highs in both points (29) and rebounds (11) along with three steals as Prairie View used a 24-2 run en route to 79-63 win at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
The senior guard stands second in the league in scoring at 16.0 points per game, and is averaging a double-double during conference play with 14.9 points and a league-best 10.4 rebounds per night against league opposition.
