Rice Owls earn NABC Team Academic Excellence Award for Sixth Straight Year

July 11, 2018

For the sixth consecutive year, the Rice men’s basketball team earned the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team Academic Award. The Owls earned the honor by posting a cumulative team grade point average higher than 3.0 during the 2017-18 season.

Rice was one of 44 Division I schools to earn the award and is one of just three to earn it each of the past six years, joining Belmont and Eastern Washington.

A total of 186 NCAA Division I, II and III and NAIA Division I and II programs were honored. Among the 44 D-I honorees this season, Rice was the only Conference USA representative.

Located in Kansas City, the NABC was founded in 1927 by Phog Allen, the legendary basketball coach at the University of Kansas. Allen, a student of James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, organized coaches into this collective group to serve and enhance the sport. The NABC currently has nearly 5,000 members consisting primarily of university and college men's basketball coaches.
