Houston Cougars announce J'Wan Roberts has signed National Letter of Intent
November 15, 2018 -- 10:18 a.m. CST
The Houston Cougars men's basketball program announced the signing of J'Wan Roberts to a National Letter of Intent to join the program for the 2019-'20 season.
Roberts, 6'7", 200 pounds, attends Shoemaker High School in Killeen, TX; and, in addition to hooping for Shoemaker HS, Roberts also plays basketball for Pro Skills on the grassroots circuit.
Roberts has tremendous timing to block shots. In fact, Roberts led the Nike EYBL Peach Jam Tournament in blocked shots.
"Nike has this event called the Peach Jam in Augusta, Georgia, every summer", Kelvin Sampson, Coogs' Men's Hoops Head Coach said. "So, all the top EYBL teams -- which is the Nike guys -- go there.
"Well, the kid that, of all those EYBL schools that went to Peach Jam, the kid that led that entire tournament in blocked shots is J'Wan Roberts."
Sampson says the first time he saw Roberts play he thought to himself "That kid fits us."
"Not really know if we were recruiting him at the time," Sampson continued. "I just liked him. Then, the more we went to see him -- each one of our staff guys. Kellen was the point person. Actually, Kellen (Asst Coach Kellen Sampson) saw him first and took me to see him and asked me what I thought. I told him I liked him; and, then the more I watched I realized like a lot of our guys like Ced (Cedrick Alley Jr.) doesn't have a position, Fabian (Fabian White) doesn't have a position, Justin (Justin Gorham) doesn't have a position, he (J'Wan) is a positionless athlete.
Sampson says J'Wan has the ability to defend all five positions.
"He can play anywhere. Defensively. If you wanted to switch, if he's at the four, he can switch one through four. If he's at the five, he can switch one through five. He's got a developing offensive game. But, he's one of those athletic kids that has the 'Wow!' factor. He'll create a lot of ooohs and aaahs in Fertitta Center. He's one of those kids that can jump and about put his head on the rim. Extremely, extremely athletic."
Roberts announced his verbal commitment to the Coogs September 2, 2018; and, he signed his National Letter of Intent November 14, 2018 -- the first day of the Early Signing Period.
