Versatility is the theme for the four newest Rockets
The Houston Rockets introduced rookies Marcus Morris, Donatas Motiejunas, Chandler Parsons and veteran guard Jonny Flynn to the media Friday afternoon. Head coach Kevin McHale likes the all-around skill sets of each of the players; and, in fact, each of the players cited versatility as keys to success.
"All four guys bring a lot of skill to the table," said head coach Kevin McHale. "My job is to put them in situations to succeed and put them in situations to look good. "
Marcus Morris describes himself as a basketball player.
"I'm just a player. I'm a player that can play different positions. I'm going to work real hard."
McHale describes Morris as an 'old-school' player.
"Marcus is old-school. He's an old-school three, four man. Back when everybody could play, you talk about guys like Marques Johnson and guys like that when I first got into the league they were basketball players. Marcus said it right. He's a basketball player. He's going to go out there and play basketball. He can do it everything. At his size, a lot of times you don't see that. He's a very skilled big man."
Marcus added, "The best part of my game is the versatility like Coach said; and, being able to guard different positions. At Kansas, we switched every ball screen because I can guard out on the floor. It was definitely easy. Offensively, I think I'm just one of those guys that can make shots. I can make shots and be a match up problem. This is league is definitely about just having different match ups and who's the best at it. I think I'm a versatile player."
Motiejunas is a confident young man; but, he's willing to do whatever the coaches ask him to do.
"I talked with the staff and they asked me the same thing. I told them whatever you need. I can do it. I'm a hard worker. I love to work hard on the court. As the coach said, I have a lot of skills and I can really up the paths for shooters. I can do a lot of different things."
Chandler Parsons, 6'9", 200, added,"With my size and my versatility, I can do a lot of things on the court. I can contribute with the ball in my hands or without the ball in my hands. Just the versatility I can bring. When I have a mismatch, I can take advantage of a lot of different spots on the floor."
Jonny Flynn was drafted in 2009; and, he averaged 13.5 points and 4.4 assists per game during his rookie season. However, Flynn was limited to just 53 games during his second season because of offseason hip surgery. Flynn's time in Minnesota was not great; and, he's thankful to the Rockets for acquiring him.
"I look at that situation to make me a better player. I saw a lot of the business side of basketball. I just grew up as a person a lot. I just thank the Houston Rockets for picking me up and seeing me as the basketball player that I can become. It's an opportunity that I'm going to take full advantage of it and catch it full force."
Flynn added, "We've got competition at every position on this team which is going to make practices much more competitive and make this a much better team."
