HOUSTON, TX -- Fertitta Center
The Houston Cougars returned to the win column Wednesday night with a 91-45 victory over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns. Twelve Coogs played in the victory. Eleven Coogs scored at least 2 points in Wednesday's game.
"Early in the season based on who you're playing, every coach in America wants to play as many players as they possibly can" Kelvin Sampson, Houston Head Coach, said after the game. "I didn't reinvent the wheel with substitutions tonight, we did what we normally do."
Houston (2-1) missed 7 of its first 9 field goal attempts and trailed Louisiana (1-2) 10-6 before Houston guard Emanuel Sharp scored 7 straight points. The Coogs extended the run to 14-0 when starting point guard Milos Uzan scored a layup followed by five points from freshman guard Mercy Miller.
The Coogs blew the game open with a 23-5 run the final 6 minutes to lead the Ragin' Cajuns 51-25 at halftime. Uzan scored a team-high 13 points for Houston in the first half. Sharp was next with 11 points. Mercy Miller added 9 points off the bench.
After the 2 for 9 field goal shooting to the first few minutes of the first half, Houston made 13 of 21 attempts to close the first half 15 for 30 from the floor including 6 for 9 from three-point range.
J'Wan Roberts converted a three-point play to put the Coogs up by 29 points (56-27) with 18:47 remaining in the ball game.
Houston's lead ballooned from there as the Coogs cruised to the 46-point victory.
Houston out-rebounded Louisiana 46-28 and forced the Ragin' Cajuns to commit 23 turnovers. The Coogs outscored the Ragin' Cajuns 27-3 in points off turnovers; 17-5 in second-chance points; 34-12 in points in the paint; and 39-21 in bench points.
Terrance Arceneaux scored 14 points off the bench to lead five Coogs in double-digit scoring.
"I feel like I'm getting better, but I don't feel like I'm all the way there yet," Arceneaux said of his conditioning and recovering from last December's torn Achilles' injury. "I still have times where I'm really gassed or I just don't have that extra push in me but I'm getting there."
Next: Houston's next game is Friday, November 22, versus Hofstra. Tip is set for 7 pm CT and airs on ESPN+.
