Houston Cougars men's and women's basketball and NCAA's Academic Progress Rate (APR)
UPDATED: May 10, 2019 -- 1:17 p.m. CT
POSTED: May 10, 2019 -- 12:07 p.m. CT
Earlier this week, the NCAA announced the Academic Progress Rate (APR) for all of its Division I member institutions for the 2017-'18 academic year as well as the overall four-year APR ending with the 2017-'18 academic year.
NOTE: A perfect APR score is 1000.
The four-year rates include student-athletes who were in school between the 2014-15 and 2017-18 academic years. The four year rate for men's basketball was 967 and 982 for women's basketball.
According to the NCAA, the "APR holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete for each academic term."
Here's how the APR is calculated:
Example:
10 players finish the term academically eligible and are retained for the spring semester. 10 x (2 of 2) = 20 of 20.
1 player is retained for the spring semester buy is academically ineligible. 1 x (1 of 2) = 1 of 2
1 player leaves the institution while academically eligible. 1 x (1 of 2) = 1 of 2
1 player leaves the institution while academically ineligible. 1 x (0 of 2) = 0 of 2.
Semester Total: 22 of 26.
APR Calculation: 22 / 26 = 0.846. 0.846 x 1000 = 846 APR.
Teams must earn a four-year average APR of 930 to compete in championships.
