Jasmyne Harris' 26 points helps Coogs wallop Incarnate Word
Posted: December 18, 2017 -- 5:29 pm CST.
HOUSTON, TEXAS (Tudor Fieldhouse) -- The Houston Cougars walloped Incarnate Word 98-67 Monday afternoon inside Rice's Tudor Fieldhouse. The game was moved to Rice University due to a power outage at Texas Southern University's campus (the Coogs temporary basketball home this season while the Fertitta Center is being constructed). The change of venue did not change the expected outcome: a blowout win for the Coogs.
Final stats: Houston 98, Incarnate Word 67 |
The Coogs never trailed in the ball game. Incarnate Word scored three consecutive points to cut Houston's lead in half; but, Houston went on an 18-1 run to lead 24-4 with 2:35 left in the opening quarter.
Houston led 29-11 at the end of the first quarter. Houston shot 65.0% (13 for 20) from the floor in the first quarter and limited IW to 4 for 14 field goal shooting.
Houston got sloppy in the second quarter and committed 7 turnovers which helped Incarnate Word stay close in the quarter. The Coogs outscored IW 18-17 in the second period and led 47-28 at halftime.
Houston's defense softened considerably in the third quarter and Incarnate Word (1-9) got on track in the third quarter and shot 53.3% (8 for 15) from the floor; however, with superior talent and depth, Houston still won the third period 30-24.
The Coogs closed out the game winning the fourth period 21-15. Houston shot 57.1% (8 for 14) from the floor in the fourth. Incarnate Word made just 5 out of 17 field goals in the final period.
Jasmyne Harris led the Coogs' with a game-high 26 points. In addition to Jasmyne Harris' 26 points, four other Coogs also scored in double-digits. Octavia Barnes scored 14 points off the bench while Myyah West finished with 13 points; and, Dorian Branch and Angela Harris each scored 13.
The 31-point spread is the largest margin of victory for the Cougars under Head Coach Ronald Hughey and is the biggest advantage for the program since an 88-48 win over UT Arlington on November 14, 2010.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 9-3 on the season, marking their best 12-game start since the 2010-11 squad started 9-3 in a season that saw them reach the NCAA Tournament.
Houston's next game is Thursday, December 21, versus George Mason. The Patriots are 10-2. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
