Notre Dame - ULL play in 2 venues; ND wins 91-51
Posted: November 22, 2016 -- 11:25 pm CST.
HOUSTON, TX (Campbell Center and Tudor Fieldhouse) - Due to a power outage, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Louisiana Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns played in two locations, miles a part Tuesday night; but, after a 2 hour and 35 minutes delay, Notre Dame won the ball game 91-51. Notre Dame's Marina Mabrey scored a career-high 27 points while Brianna Turner (from nearby Manvel High School) scored 16 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.
Louisiana-Lafayette led 3-2 in the first quarter when Notre Dame went on a 11-0 run; but, turnovers plagued the Fighting Irish the final six minutes of the quarter which helped the Ragin Cajuns pull within four points (19-15) at the end of the first period.
In the second quarter, Notre Dame controlled the ball and increased the tempo; and, more importantly, the Fighting Irish got the ball to Turner. Turner converted three alley-oop passes in to lay-ups during a 17-0 blitz which blew the game wide open.
With 2:44 remaining, Notre Dame's Kathryn Westbeld scored a lay-up; but, six seconds later, the lights went out at Campbell Center.
Literally.
The Campbell Center remained in darkness for an hour; and, the two teams had three options: cancel the game; find another venue to play the game Tuesday night; or, play the game Wednesday morning.
The teams found a venue to play the game Tuesday night: Rice University's Tudor Fieldhouse.
Therefore, the teams, family members, staff, and media packed up and drove to Tudor.
The game resumed at the 2:38 mark. Notre Dame outscored ULL 4-3 and led 42-20 at halftime.
The halftime was definitely shorter than usual; and, the third quarter began roughly five minutes later.
Both teams shot the ball well in the third period; but, the Fighting Irish continued increasing the lead and led 67-38 after three quarters and cruised to the victory in the fourth period.
After the ball, Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw and Brianna Turner spoke with the media; and both discussed the unique opportunities of playing one game in two different locations in one night.
Coach McGraw also noted her disappointment none of the local area universities agreed to play Notre Dame in Houston which is why Louisiana Lafayette was contacted.
"Really disappointed we couldn't get anybody to play us here," said Coach McGraw. "We called every school in probably a two hour radius."
With the win, Notre Dame improves to 5 and 0 on the young season while the Ragin Cajuns' record moves to 1 and 1.
Next for both teams: the Fighting Irish hosts TCU, November 26, at 12 p.m. while the Ragin' Cajuns play Southeast Missouri State, November 25, at 1:30 p.m.
