NEW ORLEANS, LA (Fogleman Arena) -- The 9th-ranked Houston Cougars rolled past the Tulane Green Wave 85-50 Sunday afternoon. Houston's Armoni Brooks (24 points) and Corey Davis, Jr. (26 points) combined for 50 points on scorching-hot three-point shooting. Brooks made 6 three-point shots while Davis splish-splashed 8 threes. The duo made 14 threes out of 19 attempts.
"Corey and Armoni-- the reason we shoot the ball well -- those two guys are very, very good three-point shooters," Houston Head Coach Kelvin Sampson said after the game.
Houston has won 10 straight ball games and remains one game ahead of Cincinnati in the American Athletic Conference standings.
Davis Jr scored 11 of Houston's first 17 points. Houston led 17-5 before Tulane called timeout. Houston's lead stretched to 25-8; however, Tulane got into a rhythm on offense and began making shots while shots stopped falling for Houston. Houston led 37-28 at halftime.
The Cougars led 41-33 after a slam dunk by Tulane freshman Moses Wood.
17:32 was on the clock after the dunk. Then, Brooks and Davis ignited from three-point land.
Davis splashed a three; then, Brook swished a 3; Davis followed with another three. Nine points in 109 seconds.
Big man Chris Harris, Jr. broke up the three-point barrage with a putback bucket. Harris began the sequence with a great blocked shot on defense and ended it with the bucket on offense.
Next, Davis sank his 6th three-point shot for a 45-33 Houston lead. Then, redshirt freshman Cedrick Alley, Jr. joined the three-point brigade and nailed a triple. Brooks followed with another triple; therefore, in barely 5 minutes of action, the Cougars sank three-pointer shots during a 20-1 run to lead 61-34 with 11:49 remaining in the game.
After Harris scored another lay-up, Davis drained his 7th three-pointer to give the Coogs a 66-36 lead. Brooks knocked down a two-point jump shot before Davis swished his 8th triple which Brooks followed by draining his 5th three-point basket.
Houston led 74-38 with 8:06 on the game clock. In less than 10 minutes, Houston turned a 41-33 lead to a 36 point rout.
After the game, Davis Jr said of his sensational shooting, "I think I did pretty well tonight. I'm pretty content with it."
Houston made 10 of 18 three-point shots in the second half.
"The great thing about most of our baskets in the second half is they come off assists. I like the fact we got our threes off our ball movement," Coach Sampson said. "We executed really good on the white board. Out of timeouts."
Houston finished the game with 20 assists on 32 baskets. Senior point guard Galen Robinson, Jr. dished out 9 assists in 23 minutes.
In addition to the spectacular shooting, Houston outrebounded Tulane 49-30 in the game including 30-13 in the second half.
"He (Coach Sampson) just really told us rebound," Davis said after the game. "That's what it came down to: offensive rebounding and defensive rebounding. We weren't being aggressiveness enough on the boards; so, we definitely had to turn that around in the second half."
Brison Gresham snared 9 rebounds and blocked 2 shots in 16 minutes off the bench.
Houston raced past Tulane 26-2 in fastbreak points.
"I think our unselfishness plays a big part in how well we play," Davis, Jr. commented. "We love to see each other be successful; and, I think that plays a big part in our team."
