Texas Southern defeats 18th-ranked Oregon

Eugene, OR -- The Texas Southern University Tigers' men's basketball team defeated the 18th-ranked Oregon Ducks 89-84 Monday. The win is the Tigers' second victory this season over a Power 5 school. TSU defeated the Baylor Bears, 72-69, November 6th.
Texas Southern big man 7-foot-2 Trayvon Reed led the Tigers with 23 points. Reed had a perfect shooting night: 9 for 9 field goal shooting and 5 for 5 from the foul line. John Jones scored 20 off the bench. Oregon freshman, 7'2" Bol Bol, scored 32 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Ducks.

The Tigers trailed the Ducks 39-32 at halftime; however, late in the first half, TSU had a chance to pull within a two before turning over the ball which led to a Ducks' three-point basket by Oregon's Victor Bailey pushed the lead to seven.
Oregon led 51-38 with 16:27 remaining in the second half.
Jeremy Combs missed one free throw but made second free throw to cut Texas Southern's deficit to 51-39. Then, the Tigers got scorching hot.
The Tigers made 11 consecutive shots over the next 7 minutes. ELEVEN. Inside and outside.
John Jones sank a three-point shut. Trayvon Reed dunked. Jones drained another three. Jalyn Patterson knocked down a jumper. Devocio Butler swished a three. Justin Hopkins sank a three. Reed scored a lay-up then finished two more alley-oop for slam dunks. Patterson sank his first (and only) three-point shot. Lastly, Jeremy Combs scored a lay-up.
Once the Tigers' were done scorching the nets, Texas Southern led 68-64 with 8:24 left in the ball game. After Bol Bol dunked, John Jones made another three-point shot to boost the TSU's lead to 71-66; but, the Ducks answered with an 9-4 run to tie the game at 75 with 3:20 on the clock. Bol Bol scored 7 of the 9 points.
Reed broke the tie with another slam dunk and two more free throws. The Ducks' Will Richardson made two free throws to cut the Tigers' lead in half (79-77) with 2:06 to go in the game. Texas Southern's Derrick Bruce scored a driving lay-up; and, the Ducks turned the ball over on back-to-back possessions. Bruce sandwiched the turnovers by sinking four free throws for an 85-77 Texas Southern lead with only 30 seconds left in the ball game.
Oregon scored five points in a row to trim TSU's lead to three points (85-82) with 17 seconds on the clock; however, the Ducks did not get any closer as Patterson and Bruce each sank two foul shots to clinch Texas Southern's victory.
Jalyn Patterson had a double-double with 13 points and 11 assists; and, Derrick Bruce added 13 points for Texas Southern. Texas Southern scored 57 points in the second half.

Texas Southern (2-4) hosts Huston-Tillotson this Thursday, November 29, at 7:30 p.m.
Oregon (4-2) heads to Houston to face the Houston Cougars (4-0) this Saturday, December 1, at 8 p.m., on ESPN2. The game will be the first game inside the Fertitta Center.
