Posted: January 24, 2017 -- 11:13 pm CDT.
HOUSTON, TX (Hofheinz Pavilion) -- The Houston Cougars defeated the Tulane Green Wave 65-51 Tuesday night to snap a three-game losing streak. Damyean Dotson led the Coogs with a game-high 20 points. Dotson also pulled down a team-high 9 rebounds.
The game was not pretty at all as each team exchanged scoreless droughts which lasted multiple minutes throughout the ball game.
Tulane's Ryan Smith made the first field goal attempt of the game; however, the Green Wave struggled to make baskets the rest of the first half (and the rest of the ball game).
With 11:42, Houston trailed 7-6; but, guard Wes VanBeck knocked down his first of 3 three-point shots to put the Coogs ahead 9-7. The Coogs did not trail the rest of the ball game as VanBeck's basket began a 15-1 Houston run. During the run, Tulane did not make a field goal for eight minutes.
Houston (14-7 overall, 5-4 in The American) led 31-16 at halftime.
Damyean Dotson knocked down a three-point shot to start the second half to give Houston an 18 point lead (34-16).
The Green Wave (4-16, 1-7) crawled within 10 points (39-29) with 14:56 on the clock; but, Houston freshman Armoni Brooks converted a three-point play which started a 10-2 Coogs' run to restore an 18 point lead (49-31) with 12:16 remaining.
Houston experienced a scoring drought which helped Tulane pull within 11 (51-40) with 8:17 on the game clock.
Dotson scored 6 points during a 10-1 Houston run to stretch the lead to 20 points (61-41) with 1:51 remaining; and, the Coogs cruised to the much needed victory.
In addition to Dotson's 20 points, Rob Gray scored 12 points while Brooks and VanBeck each scored 11 points.
