HOUSTON, TX (H&PE Arena) -- Sometimes rivalry games turn into nail biters. Saturday night's match-up between Texas Southern and Prairie View was not a nail biter. Texas Southern dominated the Panthers
64-38; and, the game was never really in doubt.
Texas Southern (4-11 overall, 3-0 in SWAC) scored the first 11 points of the game and never looked back.
Prairie View (1-14, 1-2) pulled within seven points twice in the first half; but, Texas Southern led by as much as 13 points in the first half and 30-19 at halftime.
TSU scored eight consecutive points to begin the second half to double up the Panthers 38-19.
Prairie View's Jayrn Johnson drained a jump shot to end PV's scoreless drought; and, both teams settled into a nice rhythm for a few minutes as TSU's lead hung around 15 or 16 points for about two minutes.
Then, BOOM!
Texas Southern exploded for a 17-5 run to lead 59-31 with 4:25 remaining in the game.
The run featured a slam dunk by TSU point guard David Blanks and a reverse slam by guard Orlando Coleman as the Tigers attacked the paint at will.
Texas Southern outscored Prairie View 38-20 in the paint.
Coleman scored a team-high 12 points for Texas Southern. Coleman was one of 9 Tigers to score at least two points in the game.
Jayrn Johnson scored a game-high 16 points for Prairie View; but, Johnson was the only Panthers' player to score in double digits.
The Panthers shot an ice cold 29.1 percent (16 for 55) from the floor -- including a frigid 25.9 percent (7 for 27) in the second half.
Texas Southern's next game is Saturday, January 16, at Jackson State. Prairie View plays at Grambling on the 16th. Both games are scheduled to tip at 5:30 p.m.
