Coogs pound Prairie View in season opener, 110-69
Posted: November 18, 2015 -- 10:35 pm CDT.
HOUSTON, TX (Hofheinz Pavilion) -- The Houston Cougars tipped off the 2015-'16 season with a 110-69 thumping of the Prairie View A&M Panthers Wednesday night in front of an announced crowd of 1,223 fans.
The Coogs (1-0) displayed the depth and versatility head coach Kelvin Sampson has mentioned to the media for months.
Devonta Pollard scored a game-high 25 points. Ten of the 11 Coogs' players scored at least 3 points in the game. Pollard also pulled down a game-high 9 rebounds; blocked three shots; picked up three steals; and dished two assists. (Note: Pollard completed his stat-sheet stuffing by making all 11 of his free throw attempts.)
Purdue transfer, Ronnie Johnson, scored 17 points (6 of 7 field goals); grabbed six rebounds; and handed out six assists. Damyean Dotson, another newcomer scored 21 points on 9 of 14 field goal shooting.
For the game, the Coogs shot 57.6% (38 for 66) from the floor; 9 for 16 from three-point range; and, a very un-Coog-like 25 of 26 from the free throw line.
Prairie View (0-2) was led by Tevin Bellinger's 19 points.
Houston's next game is Saturday, November 21, versus Florida A&M. Tip is set for 7 p.m. inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
