Lady Tigers hold off Prairie View

HOUSTON, TX (H&PE Arena) -- Te'era Williams played 22 minutes; committed six turnovers; and fouled out; however, Williams scored a team-high 13 points and helped the Texas Southern Lady Tigers defeat their arch-rival, Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers, 51-46, Saturday evening in front of an announced crowd of 4,427 fans.

The first 12 minutes of the game featured  three ties and three lead changes; however, after Prairie View's Latia Williams made a jump shot to pull Prairie View A&M within one (17-16), Te'era Williams scored six of Texas Southern's next eight points to help TSU finish the half with a 12-4 run and lead 29-20 at the half.

Williams started the second half with a three point play to stretch the lead to 12. TSU's lead grew to 14 (34-20); but, Prairie View scored seven straight points to trail 34-27 with 15 minutes remaining in the ball game.

Turnovers and missed field goals reigned for four minutes. The only points scored were one free throw made by TSU's Kayla West and another foul shot made by Williams.

JaQuandria Williams split two free throws at the 9:41 mark to end Prairie View's scoreless drought and make the score 36-28 Texas Southern (12-9 overall, 9-1 in the SWAC).

West scored four straight points as the Lady Tigers went on a 6-0 to increase the lead to 42-28 with 8:05 remaining in the game.

Larissa Scott scored four points as PV began to make one final push. The Lady Panthers (8-12, 5-5) trailed 46-34 before Kiarra Etienne scored six points during a 10-0 run to trail by just two points (46-44) with 33 seconds remaining.

West made two free throws; but, Etienne answered with a layup; and, Texas Southern led 48-46 with 16 seconds on the clock.

Etienne fouled Janelle McQueen which sent McQueen to the foul line with 8 seconds left. McQueen missed the first but made the second.

Latia Williams raced up the court; but, instead of shooting a three-point shot, Williams attempted a layup and missed. Gianne Fleming grabbed the miss and was fouled. Fleming made both free throws to close out the scoring and give Texas Southern a regular season sweep over Prairie View.

The Lady Panthers shot 32.8% (19 for 58) from the floor and turned the ball over 19 times.

Despite 22 turnovers and 40.4% field goal shooting, Texas Southern picked up win number nine in a row.
