October 29, 2011 -- 7:03 p.m.
The Texas Southern Men’s basketball season begins with an exhibition game against Wiley College on November 7th in the H&PE Arena. Their first official game is in Waco, TX, against Baylor. The Tigers have one more home game against Eastern Michigan before hitting the road for the rest of the preconference season. The Tigers will play at least two games on national TV…Alabama State on Jan. 30th and Mississippi Valley on Feb. 20th.
The defending 2011 SWAC Champions were picked to finish 4th in the conference by the SWAC head coaches during their preseason selections. Alabama State was picked to finish first followed by Mississippi Valley and Jackson State. The Tigers finished the 2011 season with a 16-2 conference record and the conference title.
The SWAC coaches also named two returning Tigers to the Preseason All- SWAC team. Sophomore guard, Lawrence Johnson-Danner (the 2011 SWAC Freshman of the Year) was selected First-team preseason All-SWAC and sophomore forward Aaron Clayborn (2010 SWAC Freshman of the Year) was named second-team preseason All-SWAC.
Here's the Tigers' 2011-2012 schedule.
The TSU Lady Tigers basketball team will kick off their season on November 11th against Norfolk State. This will also be the team’s annual “Plant the Seed Early” community event where middle school students from Houston and the surrounding areas are invited to the game and to participate in other the fun activities.
The pre-game festivities are highlighted by a free campus tour for the first 1,000 students, a virtual tour inside the arena with every academic school, college, and department represented, a live pre-game radio broadcast and recognition of students who are on the honor roll as well as students who have maintained a perfect attendance record. The festivities begin at 9:00am and the game tips off at 11:00am. Admission is free.
Last season, more than 3,600 students attended the community event and they are expecting to double the participation this year.
“This is a great opportunity for the entire Texas Southern University and it’s women’s basketball program to impact and brand tomorrow’s students, NOW! Most importantly, this is a great opportunity to recognize our youth amongst other peers throughout the city of Houston,” stated head coach Yolanda Wells-Broughton.
