HOUSTON, TX (Tudor Fieldhouse) -- The defending NCAA champs visited the city of Houston and put on an expected demolition of the host Rice Owls Tuesday night with a dominating 89-49 victory in front of lots of green and gold-clad fans of the Baylor Lady Bears.
Baylor (6-1) knew they owned a mismatch in the post and they exploited it. The entire game.
Led by senior All-Everything Brittney Griner, the Lady Bears scored 50 points (seemed like more) in the paint.
Griner scored a game-high 35 points on a superb 16 for 19 field goal shooting. (Griner made her last 15 field goal attempts.)
Destiny Williams scored 12 points on 6 of 7 shooting from the field while Brooklyn Pope scored 17 points off the bench in 19 minutes. Pope shot 8 for 12 from the floor.
Griner, Williams, and Pope combined to shoot a ridiculous 30 for 38 from the floor.
Dominating.
The Owls (2-4) were led by preseason Conference USA Player of the Year's Jessica Kuster's 18 points and 13 rebounds. Kuster was swarmed by Baylor's suffocating defense and made six of her 19 field goal attempts. Christal Porter added 11 points and seven rebounds while Zoe Rogers scored 10 points off the Owls' bench.
Baylor's freshman point guard Niya Johnson dished out 11 assists (only 1 turnover) in 25 minutes.
Rice continues its seven-game homestand this Saturday, with a 1pm tip-off, versus McNeese State.
