DR. CAVIL’S HBCU PLAYER OF THE YEAR:

MAJOR DIVISION (WOMEN’S)

The Hampton Pirates’ Keiara Avant is Dr. Cavil’s Major Division HBCU Women’s Player of the Year. Keiara, a senior forward, help lead the Pirates to a MEAC regular season championship and tournament championship averaging a double-double of 16.3 points and 10.3 rebounds a game.  She led the conference in rebounding and was fifth in scoring in the MEAC and had a field goal percentage of (.470). She shot 75% from the charity stripe shooting 143 of 190 and tallied eight blocks and 75 steals during the regular season.  Nationally in the NCAA Division I, Avant ranked ninth in the nation with 19 double-doubles.

DR. CAVIL’S HBCU PLAYER OF THE YEAR:

MAJOR DIVISION (MEN’S)

The Texas Southern Tigers’ Aaric Murray is Dr. Cavil’s Major Division HBCU Men’s Player of the Year. Murray, a graduate center/forward, led the Tigers to a SWAC tournament championship and automatic NCAA Tournament bid.  After scoring Murray a career-high 48 points to lead Texas Southern to a last-second 90-89 upset win over Temple early in the season, he continued with superlatives and led the SWAC in scoring for the entire regular season averaging 21.7 points per game while hauling in 7.7 rebounds per contest.  He was TSU’s leading scorer in 17 of their 29 games on the year.  Defensively, Murray blocked a league best 69 shots for an average of 2.4 per outing.  Nationally in the NCAA Division I, he ranked first in the nation in point per game, 38.0.

The Major Division Poll, consist of NCAA Division I Basketball programs and the Mid-Major Division Poll, which consist of NCAA Division II, NAIA Division I and NAIA Division II programs. This format introduced to the public based on the request of Black College blogging fans and on the research that consists of data mining and the difference in scholarship limitation and requirements beset by NCAA and NAIA bylaws (i.e. NCAA Division I - 15, NCAA Division II - 10, NAIA Division I - 11 and NAIA Division II - 6).
